America's national park of speed — 4.048 miles through the Wisconsin Kettle Moraine
- 4.048 mi
- 14 turns
- Opened 1955
- Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin
- 160 ft drop start to back straight
Road America opened in September 1955 when highway engineer Clif Tufte carved a permanent course through 525 acres of Kettle Moraine farmland near Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin — moving road racing off the village streets after public-road events were banned. The first SCCA National drew Phil Hill to victory that weekend; more than seven decades later the layout is still essentially the course Tufte laid out.
At 4.048 miles (6.5 km) with 14 turns, Road America is one of the longest and least-altered road courses in the world. Elevation drops roughly 160 feet from start/finish to the straight between the Kink and Canada Corner, then climbs back through the final sector — a lap that rewards commitment on the fast back straight and precision in the technical corners.
The circuit hosts IndyCar, IMSA, NASCAR, and MotoAmerica, and remains a bucket-list HPDE destination for club racers and track-day drivers across the Midwest.
Notable features
- Carousel (Turns 9–10): A long, fast, off-camber double-apex sweep through the tree line — one of the corner complexes that defines the lap.
- The Kink (Turn 11): A flat-out left-hand kink on the back straight where prototypes and GT cars carry serious speed; lift even slightly and you will feel it.
- Canada Corner (Turn 12): Hard braking at the end of the back straight into a downhill left — classic outbraking territory and a prime overtaking zone.
- Turn 5: Heavy braking from the front straight's first sector; wheel-to-wheel action and spectator viewing on the hillside.
- Turn 14 to the front straight: A fast sweeper that feeds the climb to start/finish — drafting battles and last-lap drama in multiple series.
