Gingerman Raceway was founded by Dan Schnitta and opened for racing in 1996 on 350 acres east of South Haven, Michigan, a lakeshore town six miles from Lake Michigan beaches. Schnitta, a racing enthusiast who had built a small kart track in his backyard years earlier, wanted a club circuit with wide runoff, smooth pavement, and no hazards like ditches or utility poles.
Alan Wilson designed the layout: 11 turns across 2.21 miles (extended from the original 1.88-mile course with a Turn 10 addition in 2010). The lap simulates a country road in a controlled environment, long straights, sweeping corners, tight apexes, and elevation change on naturally rolling land. Gingerman has won Victory Lane Magazine's Safe Track Award and is widely regarded as one of the safest club circuits in the Midwest.
The track hosts SCCA, Gridlife, HPDE, and motorcycle events, with four possible configurations including counter-clockwise running. For track-day drivers learning the ropes, or experienced racers pushing the limit, Gingerman is a regular stop on the Great Lakes calendar.
Notable features
- Turn 10 extension (2010): Added 1,770 feet of pavement and elevation change, lengthening the back straight and the full course to 2.21 miles.
- Continuous corners: Schnitta wanted a lap that never felt like a drag strip, the layout keeps the wheel turning.
- Wide runoff and smooth pavement: Designed to minimize damage for newer drivers while still rewarding committed laps.
- Counter-clockwise option: One of few Midwest circuits that can run reverse direction for variety and training.
- South Haven location: A track-day weekend doubles as a lakeshore trip, beaches, dining, and paddock camping six miles away.
